PLOT-BASED...
How have humans survived?
Sheer dumb luck, in many cases! However, safety in numbers, personal history in survival, or/and pacts with the supernatural community have been vital for the survival of many. We encourage you to find a narrative that works best for your character, but most humans live in protected territories either freely or under imprisonment.
Is there electricity?
For those with the know-how and resources to run generators, or find alternative sources of power, there is absolutely the possibility. That being said, consider this a rudimentary era, where likely forms of communication are transistor radios and not cellphones. A lot of people have had to return to the basics- candles and lamps, or battery-powered torches (assuming you can scavenger the batteries to keep them going). Literal fires instead of gas-powered stoves, radiators or forced air. Cards, board games, dice, imagination, scavenged books instead of TV, Netflix and cinema. You get the picture.
What are the commodities in this world?
Blood - human, ideally, but also animal- is a rich commodity for anyone, because it can be used to trade with vampires, who vastly outnumber mortals and are beginning to starve. As such, entire humans are often snatched and trafficked, and sometimes even bred, in order to provide for the majority. They are invaluable regardless of background, gender, or race.
For humans to survive, however, other commodities are also required. Food, medicine, safety, warmth. Whether for human protectors or human investors, these are vital considerations. Old drugs can be scavenged from abandoned and destroyed buildings, old cans of food are still, generally, usable. Protected territories have tried to set up farms and greenhouses, to self-sustain, however they have to be careful of their CO2 output else put themselves at risk of attracting the Otherworld creatures.
Vegetation, CO2 canisters, weaponry, and scientific resources are also vital. Protection set-ups are necessary for all, whether running solo or part of a territory. Scientific resources are used, primarily, to attempt to create synthetic blood substitutes, to try and replicate medicinal drugs, or to research the Otherworld.
What kind of magic exists in the world of RSM?
We are a very open-minded site with a lot of flexibility. We've seen magicks based in fandoms such as HP, SPN and Discworld, and magicks drawing on real world cultural and religious beliefs such as Voodoo, Paganism, the Arbahimic faiths, and Romani heritage. We are currently running with the idea that levels of magic are decreasing in the world as the Otherworld continues to keep hold, but these vary from person to person, to allow for creative and fun roleplay.
HOUSEKEEPING
I want to drop an old character. How do I do that?
Not every character will have made it through the ten year plot shift, and we want to honour that. You may opt to delete your accounts, to minimise the number of characters you see in your switch screen. Otherwise, we can reclassify your character as DECEASED (this will change their group, colour coding and title). You may continue to post with them in the 'Old World' section of the site if you need to tie up loose ends.
Regardless, we have also put up an 'In Memoriam' thread, where you can detail as much or as little as you care to about the passing of characters you've elected not to carry through. We recommend publishing some minor detail so that those other characters who might be affected by this death will have an awareness of what happened and when.
How active am I expected to be?
Unlike many sites, we choose not to run activity checks. We're a predominantly 25+ aged community with IRL commitments and possibly multiple sites to contribute to. As such, we have a very lax attitude towards activity. You are responsible for your own activity, your own plots, and your own investment in the site. However, lapses in activity do happen, and for the sake of those left hanging in the balance, waiting on plot-necessary material, we ask that if you anticipate an extended absence that you let those affected know.
Can I have a board set up for my character's location?
Since the reboot, we're trying to reduce the number of areas on the site's main page. As such, whilst we are willing to set up new locations for you, we will only be creating boards that would be utilised by multiple characters in multiple threads. Realistic pacts between territories are a very useful way of encouraging inter-board threading, and allowing your characters to mingle outside of their isolated set-up. We recommend considering territorial connections before requesting an area. If you feel an area is merited, please submit a request to the admin.
...how about a sub-board?
Again, we're attempting to reduce clutter. That said, if you anticipate multiple threads that require a separate section, speak with the area moderator, who can in turn put in a request to the admin to add a sub-board.
I want to play a species that doesn't exist on your site yet. Can I do that?
Absolutely! We're a multi-fandom based site with a lot of flexibility. Just check out the Other Creature Rules and the Other Creature Information in that section of the Registration board, for guidance on expectations and process of alternative species. Please also consider how your proposed species will function in this world, whether they are susceptible to the Otherworld monsters, and how they have survived in the dystopian wasteland.
